Dear Shipmates

Introduction

Hello, I'm Jon! I am an experienced blue water sailor and acquired this boat in December 2024. My partner Sophie and I plan on spending the next couple of years upgrading the boat with some extended cruising a few years from now. Currently, we are alternating between the northeast in the summer (Eastern Long Island to Midcoast Maine) and the Bahamas and Florida Keys in winter. Transit periods are fall, around October for the trip South, and late spring, May, for the voyage North.
We'd love to have somewhat experienced passage crew for longer trips of up to a week to ten days. My partner is still working full time, and so will likely not be aboard for passages longer than 3 or 4 days.

About the boat, the plans, and current crew

The boat is a custom built cruising boat, built on a Cal 46 hull and custom fit out by the amazing craftsman Erik Vader. First launched in 2004, it has been lightly used in recent years. I am currently fine tuning, upgrading and clearing up some deferred maintenance. Since acquiring the boat in December I have logged about 1500 miles over two longer passages (Key Largo to Newport RI) and numerous shorter trips. I have found the boat to be very seaworthy, though rather roll-y under bare poles so I tend to keep at least the main up even while motoring to keep it more steady. She likes a lot of wind to sail well, and I don't object to motoring over long passages if the weather is not cooperative. Going North, I have utilized the Gulf Stream and had several 200+ nautical mile days with the greatest being over 250. I doubt we'll achieve this heading South, but that's how it goes... it's a nice ride anyway and if you're always racing through life you'll just end up wondering why you got to the finish so quickly. But I digress...
For the next few years, the boat will be in Long Island and Maine during the summer, Keys and Bahamas in winter. The boat is well equipped, and seaworthy with a simple sloop rig and quite capable in rough conditions.

What is expected of the crew

clean & tidyeasy-goingenthusiasticfriendlyrespectfulpolitepositive outlookcan follow orderswill not bring a petharmony

Boats, even large ones are generally cozy spaces. As my grandfather used to tell me when I was younger, "That boat is going to get a foot shorter every day you're on passage..."
Looking for drama free courteous crew that can function in the best interests of the vessel and their fellow shipmates in order to make the experience of offshore passages safe and enjoyable for everyone aboard. The end of a successful passage should wrap up with handshakes and hugs and a promise to do it again soon.
Not really looking for crew during the summer, but feel free to contact me if you are interested in connecting for fall and spring deliveries. For passages, we do not do coastal day hops with nightly anchoring. We head offshore for multi day passages and mile making. We typically will avoid the ICW unless we are stopping for haul out and maintenance.
